Freedom Delayed: An Introduction to Juneteenth

This introductory program explores Juneteenth, its origins, historical significance, and why it continues to be observed today. Participants will learn how the holiday marks a pivotal moment in U.S. history and reflects the ongoing journey toward equity and justice. The session will also invite reflection on the broader idea of freedom, what it has meant across time, and what it means in our lives and communities today.
Presenter Kira Maddox serves as the director of the Office of Community, Belonging, and Engagement at Utica University. Her work centers on translating institutional values into everyday experiences through community‑building programs, collaborative partnerships, dialogue‑based engagement, and support for co‑curricular and civic involvement. Kira also serves as the institution’s Title VI Coordinator, overseeing compliance with federal civil rights regulations related to discrimination and harassment based on race, color, and national origin, and is the current chair of the NAACP Oneida County Branch's Communications Committee.
