INTERNET RESOURCES FOR NONPROFITS
(Return to Topic Directory)

Computers and Information Technology

NEWS & VIEWS FEATURE - As more and more people turn to the Web for everyday activities, nonprofits are looking for ways to use the Internet to serve supporter, client and member needs. One type of Internet company could make a difference: Application Service Providers (ASPs), companies that offer state-of-the-art online software tools for "rent." ASPs develop and rent specialized software tools that are accessible via the Internet. Virtually every major type of expensive software is now available via an ASP. Nonprofits of all sizes can now take advantage of high-end software without some of the hassles involved when purchasing and housing software on their own computers. (This article by Marc Osten and Michael Stein first appeared in the August 2000 issue of the Nonprofit Quarterly Volume 7, Issue 1)

NEWS & VIEWS FEATURE - Creating a successful online community is one of the most sought after and elusive goals in a Web strategy. Companies budget huge sums to perfect online community strategies as they seek to build customer relationships that create loyal consumers. In a nonprofit context, the "customer" takes the form of a constituent, advocate, grantee, funder, member, board member, or citizen. And the stakes are higher because usually the nonprofit's goal is to sell not a product, but a mission. In this context, an online community can be a powerful tool to bring constituents together to share their concern for an issue. "Online community" is the concept of convening people in virtual space and describes a range of online activities including electronic collaboration, virtual networks, Web-based discussions or electronic mailing lists. NEWS & VIEWS FEATURE - With nearly a majority of folks now online, and millions more added every year, are today's web sites and internet resources available and accessible to persons with disabilities? Literally, a world of information is just a few buttons and clicks away... except for persons with physical challenges or other special needs. Web standards have been developed and recommended for use in page design, but only a small percentage of sites are even somewhat accessble. This CNET Special Report provides guidance and information for web developers to use in making their site more usable for persons with disablities.

ASP - Application Service Providers - Software which most people use is bought and installed on their own PC or network. With software provided by an ASP (Application Service Provider), the software instead resides on the provider's computer and you access it through the internet through your browser. And you 'rent' the software, for example paying a monthly charge, rather than buying it outright. Your data is also likely to be stored on the provider's disk space. This site, from CharityFocus, is a listing of ASP services that might be useful for many nonprofits.

There are several downloading options available below and more information on this script can be found in the Readme file.
